Culpeper Masonic Cemetery and Episcopal Church Cemetery Tour

Join us for a tour of the Culpeper Masonic Cemetery and Episcopal Church Cemetery, Saturday, October 26th 4:30pm-6:30 pm and learn more about the early Masonic connection between these two early Culpeper cemeteries from Rev. Shelton. The Cemetery, now under the care of the Masonic Cemetery Foundation, was originally given to the "Masons of Culpeper," the Fairfax Lodge, under the will of American Revolutionary War hero General Edward Stevens in 1820.  The original one-acre Stevens family burial site has grown to over seven acres. In addition to General Stevens family many prominent early Culpeper families such as Buttons, Waite, Kyle, Reams, Gunn and Hudson, to name a few, are buried here. St. Stephens Episcopal Church is the oldest church building in the Town of Culpeper, built in 1821. The church was built on land donated by Revolutionary War Hero Edward Stevens who also donated land for the Masonic cemetery. During the Civil War, the church became a hospital following the Battles of First and Second Manassas, Brandy Station, and Cedar Mountain. During the winter of 1863. A cemetery and monument are on the church grounds. The tour begins and ends at the Historic Train Depot in Downtown Culpeper, where you will board the trolley to embark upon the Culpeper Masonic Cemetery and the Episcopal Church Cemetery. We ask that you come prepared for an hour plus long walking tour.
