Peace Table: Israeli-Palestinian Pop Up with Alon Shaya

WHEN: Saturday, April 25th at noon (Saturday of Festival Intl) WHERE: The Mouton Plantation (338 N Sterling St, Lafayette) WHAT: Israeli-Palestinian lunch to celebrate both cousin cultures & cuisines WHO: Chef Alon Shaya, his crew and I will be putting the event on THE BACK STORY: What started as a dream is happening here in Lafayette! I had met 2 Israeli soldiers who were about my age (early 20's) at a secluded beach in Costa Rica in the 90's . Being of Palestinian heritage from my mother's side and never meeting Israelis face to face, it was a memorable experience for me...and for them. They were about to smoke a joint and asked me to join them...I did. We ended up traveling the rest of my time there together across Costa Rica. That experience has had an amazing and lasting effect on all of us. (This encounter is a short story in my book Travels in the Seven Directions) So I always wanted to show how food and music can bring "the other" together. What better way to lessen hate than to break bread, drink and talk together? AND during Festival International at that? I met Alon Shaya (James Beard Award-winning chef owner of Saba's in NOLA and Safta's in Denver) at a boucherie in Grand Couteau and saw him in action. But it wasn't until a few years later when we accidentally met again and I had the courage to ask to do an Israeli-Palestinian pop up together that the dream started to become a possible reality. Right away he agreed and this dream event started taking shape. This will be a small event relative to my pop-ups with only 30 or so tickets sold.
