      Arts Kauai presents an evening with John Cruz, Kealoha, Jess Penner and Kauai Songwriters. The Kauai Songwriters Music Festival is scheduled for May 9, 2020 at the Kauai Community Colleges Performing Arts Center from 6-9:30 pm. John Cruz is a legendary Hawaiian performer and songwriter who has won multiple Na Hoku Hanohano Awards. In 2005, John added a Grammy Award to his list of honors. His original song "Jo Bo's Night" was featured on the compilation CD Slack Key Guitar Volume 2, which won the first Grammy ever awarded for Hawaiian music. John has performed around the world, including at the White House for Barrack Obama. John is on the Hawaii Songwriting Festival staff and shares his music and the craft of songwriting with aspiring young songwriters from around the world. Kealoha is the first Poet Laureate of Hawai`i. As an internationally acclaimed poet and storyteller, he has performed throughout the world -- from the White House to the `Iolani Palace, from Brazil to Switzerland. He is the first poet in Hawai`i's history to perform at a governor's inauguration, was selected as a master artist for a National Endowment for the Arts program, and received a Community Inspiration Program grant from the Native Arts and Cultures Foundation. In the 7 years that he has represented Hawai`i at the National Poetry Slam, he has performed on the finals stage 4 times, was ranked in the top ten of the nations best poets in 2007, and was honored as a "National Poetry Slam Legend" in 2010. Kealoha was featured on HBOs Brave New Voices series presented by Russel Simmons, and he has also made appearances on NBC, PBS, the Food Network, National Public Radio, and the Na Hoku Hanohano Awards. He has performed at hundreds of live venues throughout the world including the Schiffbau (Zurich, Switzerland), the Bienal do Ibirapuera (Sao Paulo, Brazil), the NFL Pro Bowl halftime show, and the National Storytelling Network Conference. Kealoha's poetry has been printed by various publishers including the National Academy of Engineering, Auckland University Press, and Bamboo Ridge. He is the poetic vocalist for Henry Kaponos Wild Hawaiian project (nominated for a Grammy), and has served as Hawai`is SlamMaster since 2003. Kealoha is the founder of HawaiiSlam (ranked 2nd in the nation), Youth Speaks Hawai`i (2-Time International Champions), and First Thursdays (the largest registered poetry slam in the world with 500+ in attendance). He graduated with honors from MIT with a degree in Nuclear Physics (and a minor in writing), served as a business consultant in San Francisco, and played around as a surf instructor prior to becoming a professional poet in 2002. Visit for more information. Jess Penner is a cheerful and cheeky, creatively ADD artist from Los Angeles. Raised on a banana farm in Hawaii; Jess is also a dinner party throwing, hen raising, people loving, thrift store shopping, self professed tomboy who hates musicals and tilapia but secretly loves painfully slow BBC miniseries and booty dancing alone in her bedroom. Signing her first record deal at age 15 - Jess has spent the last 22 years making a career as a professional musician via touring, album sales, licensing deals, and working as a songwriter / producer. Jess' Professional Highlights: Numerous placements in TV, commercial campaigns, and web series. Television clients include ABC, CBS, FOX, MTV, VHI, Lifetime, and The OC. Commercial campaigns for brands including : Payless Shoes, Disneyland, JC Penney, Sony Playstation, Bose, T-mobile, Jergens, Ford, Edison, Days Inn, Dannon, and more. Over 1000 career live performances (including every state in the US), as well as international tours in Europe, The Mediterranean, Canada and Asia. Opened for Tyrone Wells, Ian Archer (Snow Patrol), and FUN.. Featured performer at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival. In addition to our featured songwriters, the Kauai Songwriting Festival will feature several local songwriters, including two finalists from Kauai Songwriters contest. The winner will be chosen at the concert and will earn entrance to the Hawaii Songwriting Festival on Hawaii Island scheduled for July 23-25, 2020 at the Westin Hapuna Prince Hotel. Airfare for the winning contestant, featured performers, and a representative of the Hawaii Songwriting Festival is provided by a gracious donation from Southwest Airlines. Local songwriters scheduled to perform at this time are: Candice and Company Saving Cadence Terry J Low and friends Bill Dick Founded in February 2019, Arts Kauai is a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation dedicated to fostering an appreciation of the arts in general, primarily focusing on music, songwriting, and literary arts through lectures, seminars, study groups, public and classroom performances. We support other Hawaiian non-profit organizations in this endeavor, filling pukas where we can. Kauai Songwriters is now an official subsidiary of Arts Kauai and has been holding open mic's and concerts for original songwriting since 2015.
