      Amateur Radio Field Day

American Radio Relay League (ARRL) Field Day, an emergency communication training exercise, is the single most popular amateur (“ham”) radio on-the-air event held annually in the US and Canada. In the 1930s, Field Day was created to show the public how amateur radio can operate “off the grid”. Most stations are set up outdoors using emergency power sources (such as generators and solar panels). Field Day combines public service, emergency preparedness, community outreach, and technical skills all in a single event.

Field Day allows amateur radio operators to practice their emergency response capabilities, when phones and even civil authorities’ communications fail.

This year, the Massanutten Amateur Radio Association (MARA) and Valley Amateur Radio Association (VARA) will participate in this Field Day event at the Stokesville Campground near Mt. Solon beginning at 2:00 pm on Saturday, June 22nd and ending at 5:00 pm on Sunday, June 23rd. The clubs strongly encourage the public to come out and see what ham radio is all about. There will be opportunities for anyone to talk on the radio to places near and far and to learn about this fascinating hobby at the Field Day event. All ages are welcome.
