      ISWAN Seminar 2019, Mumbai

'Working together to protect and promote the mental wellbeing of seafarers' The mental wellbeing of seafarers is of major concern to the maritime industry. There is increasing awareness of this issue but many companies, organisations and individuals are still not sure what to do and who they can turn to. The ISWAN 2019 Seminar will invite international speakers to help provide pointers / signposts and practical solutions to all those who are concerned about this issue and want to do something about it. The one-day seminar will explore the following topics: Session 1: What is the scale of the problem of mental wellbeing at sea? (Per Gullestrup, Chair of ISWAN) Where's the evidence? Are seafarers different - what are the structural factors that have a negative impact on the mental wellbeing of seafarers? How have issues of mental health at sea impacted the life of a seafarer and his family? Session 2: Learning from other sectors - what are they doing? (Jorgen Gullestrup, MATES in Construction; Dr Harish Shetty, Psychiatrist) Session 3: How are women, young seafarers and other minorities on board affected by social isolation and what can be done about it? How does sexual harassment impact negatively on women seafarers' mental wellbeing? (Sanjam Gupta, WISTA) Why does there appear to be a higher suicide rate among cadets and what can be done about it? Session 4: How can we work together to find solutions and share best practices? What can companies do? What can maritime training institutions do? What can government maritime administrations do? What can individual seafarers do? Session 5: What are organisations, companies and governments doing? What can ISWAN do? Attendance at this event is free. Photo: Dylan May
