      EVENT DETAILS
President Lincoln and Chief Justice Taney:The Great Antagonists

Roger Taney was the product of privilege and formal education, which stands
in stark contrast to Abraham Lincoln, his impoverished youth and selfeducation.
Their antagonism began in the 1840s when Taney ruled against
Lincoln in a split decision in the only case that Lincoln as lawyer ever argued
before the Supreme Court. Lincoln spoke out sharply against the Dred Scott
decision in 1857. The two clashed repeatedly during Lincoln's presidency. The
feud continued until Taney's death in 1864.
