Asilomar Dunes Walk at Asilomar State Beach

Of all the beautiful things that are easy to take for granted, probably none is easier than sand dunes. And yet, since we indeed took them for granted for many years, carelessly trampling the delicate coastal habitat, they almost disappeared entirely from this region. The dunes at Asilomar might look passive piles of sand—they are actually far more complex and fragile. The reason they pile up the way they do is because of specially evolved plants whose extremities to trap the grains of sand that blow in the wind. So when you kill the plant, you kill the dune. Invasive ice plant is what came to replace much of the native vegetation but ice plant provides neither food nor shelter to local wildlife. Efforts to save the dunes kicked off in 1984 with the goal of restoring conditions to those of pre-Euroepan contact. For a closer understanding of the environment and of conservation efforts, attend either Saturday or Sunday’s free guided tours or be on the lookout for future tour dates. No RSVP needed: just show up at the State Parks desk at Phoebe Hearst Social Hall, aka the People's Living Room. [AS]
