      2020 Jefferson Beach Naturalists Course

What unusual thing did you find on the beach last week and how do you identify it? Why are some beaches sandy and others rocky? Why should we care about ocean acidification? Learn all about our local nearshore and marine resources in the 2020 Jefferson Beach Naturalist Course! Classes will be offered on Thursdays, April 16th through May 21st, from 9 am to 4 pm. This lively 6-week class is designed for anyone interested in marine life and habitats. Students will learn about coastal geology, intertidal habitats and species, plankton, seaweeds, climate change, community science opportunities and much more. Each session includes classroom lectures by regional experts and field trips to explore new and familiar beaches with fresh perspectives. Class and field trip locations include Port Hadlock, Port Townsend, Discovery Bay, Dabob Bay, and more! Students are expected to volunteer 40 hours for local marine-related programs over the next year. Through volunteering, students can give back to their communities while extending their learning beyond the course, through citizen science projects such as counting salmon or Olympia oysters, planting trees to restore habitat, and helping with public outreach events. Registration closes at 9 pm on April 9th. Space is limited. Cost is $180. If you have financial need, scholarships are available for qualifying applicants. WSU Jefferson Extension Refund Policy: registration costs will be refunded, minus a small processing fee, to participants no less than 7 days prior to the event. For more information, please contact Monica Montgomery at 360-379-5610 x 230 or < Please know that we are moving forward with the training program as scheduled.
