The Pioneering Jewish American Women Directors

Although women have always been involved in the production of American films as actresses and screenwriters, their entry into the ranks of directors was belated. Changes in the American film industry and public attitudes towards ethnicity and women’s rights in the 1960s paved the way for the emergence of significant Jewish women directors in the 1970s who brought Jewish and feminist perspectives to their films. This lecture will profile Elaine May (The Heartbreak Kid, 1972) Joan Micklin-Silver (Hester Street, 1975), Claudia Weil (Girlfriends, 1978), Lee Grant (Tell Me a Riddle, 1980), and Barbara Streisand (Yentl, 1982) tracing their paths into directing through their own celebrity in the entertainment industry or through the making of documentaries and independent films.
