Shenandoah Valley Art Center Exhibits Opening: Modern Folk Art

The Shenandoah Valley Art Center, during the month of December, is exhibiting in the Cabell/Arehart Gallery the Annual Winter Contemporary Juried Exhibition: Modern Folk Art. This carefully selected collection showcases contemporary folk works from artists steeped in tradition and those pushing boundaries in materials and execution. In the words of exhibitor Jeffery Guinn: “The essence of folk art seems to me, despite the broad definitions that exist, that it represents distinct cross sections of people and places. The materials and images that I am drawn to working with have always been, intentionally and subconsciously, representative of how I think about myself in relation to other people and the geography and objects that surround us. I am also interested in our relationships to the past and future, through cultural lineage and physical objects. I think the more we understand 'our place', the more we can connect with those around us and the more we can shape the future into something desirable.” Joe Engle is the guest juror for this exhibit. Engle is a Staunton based contemporary folk artist and past winner of the Best in Show honor of the Fall Foliage Art Show. Folk Artists featured in this unique exhibit: Joe Engle, Regan Caron, Angus Carter, Jeffery Guinn, Jim Kopp, Anne McInnis, Neil Stavely, Joshua Yurges, and Alla Zareva. An opening will be held Saturday, December 14, 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. and the public is encouraged to come, meet, and talk to the artists.
