George Washington National Forest - North River Gorge Hike

The protection of watersheds was one of the major reasons for the creation of our National Forests. Almost one fifth of the drinking water in the United States has its origins on national forest land. The nearby North River in the George Washington National Forest provides drinking water to the city of Staunton.  Join Wild Virginia for a 4.5 mile point to point walk along (and through!) the North River. Along the way we will discuss the importance of our forests in watershed protection.  The North River Gorge trail is relatively flat, but we will cross the river 8 times along the way making it an easy to moderate hike. So expect to get your feet wet, enjoying the cool waters on a late June summer day. We will begin at 10 am and expect to be done by early afternoon.  We will contact registrants the week before the event with more details including what to bring and carpool information. In the meantime, please contact David Sellers at or 434 760-4809 with any questions.
