Biodiversity in a Changing Climate: How Climate Change is Furthering Global Diversity Loss

Attend the December meeting of the Oshkosh Citizens' Climate Lobby to learn about biodiversity in a changing climate. Our guest speaker is Dr. McPhee, associate professor at UW Oshkosh (https://uwosh.edu/biology/about-us/faculty-and-staff/elsbeth-mcphee-2/). Summary of Dr. McPhee's talk: Over millennia, climate has directly shaped how species are distributed around the globe and the evolution of behavioral strategies that optimize survival and reproduction. Currently, human-induced climate change is causing rapid environmental shifts that profoundly affect many species' continued survival and reproduction. Options available to organisms living in a warming world include moving to stay in the appropriate thermal zone, altering behavioral strategies to fit with the new environment, or extinction. Unfortunately, the first two options are not feasible for most species due to the rate at which the environment is changing, resulting in high rates of extinction. Dr. McPhee's talk is sponsored by the Oshkosh Citizens' Climate Lobby. The talk is free and open to the public. Metered parking is across the street from Reeve Union.
